Dinner with a Book

UNAFRAID
by Adam Hamilton

Thursdays
October 17, 24 and
November 7, 14, 21, 2024

Americans are anxious people. A recent study found that one in five of us has an anxiety disorder and we spend over $2 billion a year on anti-anxiety medications. Often our life events play a significant role in our worries and fears.

In this study based on his book Unafraid, Adam Hamilton explores the most common worries and fears experienced by Americans today. He considers practical steps for overcoming these fears, and reflects upon fear in the light of Scripture and a faith that promises again and again that we don’t need to live in fear. We can live with courage and hope.

Pastor Michelle’s Article

Dear Friends,

In his book, “Unafraid,” Adam Hamilton reminds us that “one of the most repeated instructions in the Bible is ‘Don’t be afraid.’ These words, in one form or another, appear over 140 times in scripture.” We see that worry and fear are not limited to this time or our lifetimes. The Bible is filled with people of faith who overcame anxiety and fear to follow God with courage and faithfulness.

We want to be those people. AUMC’s next Supper and Study begins on Thursday, October 17. I invite you to join in reading and discussing “Unafraid” by Adam Hamilton.

It is not a coincidence that we are beginning this study in the weeks leading up to the presidential election. In this time when religious and political extremists, advertisers, numerous media companies, and others are trying to manipulate us through our fears, we welcome the opportunity to learn how to deal more effectively with worry, fear, and anxiety.

In addition to this particularly timely content, “Unafraid” is an all-church, multi-generational study. We will share a simple meal starting at about 5:15 pm, and then the children, youth, and adults will each have their own “Unafraid” lessons and activities.

You’re invited to buy your own book, especially if you desire a digital copy. The church office is ordering some copies as well; let Kathy know if you need one of those. “Unafraid” begins with this quote from John Lennon: “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love…all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”

In times of uncertainty, we are tempted to turn from left to right, looking for definitive, fast, and easy answers to life’s complex challenges. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are motivated and guided by love, not fear in our living and decisionmaking.

Together, and with the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit, we are able to resist manipulation and alarmists. Even in challenging times, we draw upon our faith to live with hope and compassion for a better world. Thanks be to God.

Grace and peace to you,
