The season of Lent is 40 days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others.

Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter” and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.

In 2020, we have the unique opportunity to really spend some time in quiet reflection as we have been essentially forced into our homes and distance ourselves from others for an undetermined length of time. Because of that, in-person church services and activities have been canceled until further notice. We will have a variety of online services and meditiations, as well as a DRIVE-THRU Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.

For the programs that will meet via Zoom, for security reasons, we will not be providing the links on any public forum. To get the link, watch your email for the weekly eBlast or email the church office at mail@atascaderoumc.org.
